Features of Maps — Making Worlds

How do map features help us read a place responsibly?

Start here

Open the B.3 source guide. Answer Do Now Q1–Q2 (3 minutes); explain one choice for feedback. Each item earns 1 point toward the weekly Retrieval Check /8. Study Map A, a fictional unlabeled public-place sketch. In your Fieldbook, record two details you SEE and two things a map reader still NEEDS. Sketch an imaginary public place; no home addresses.

  • What evidence supports your idea?

Your student can do the historical thinking; you can help them make space for it. If materials or access are a challenge, ask us for printed copies or support.

Our classroom

Our Class

Global History I, 2026–27, with Mr. Zarrella and Ms. Spencer. This year we explore early humans, civilizations, beliefs, empires, and connections across regions.

Students ask questions, investigate sources, and support their ideas with evidence.

A Fieldbook is a record of thinking: questions, notes, and evidence gathered as we go.

A day in class

Most classwork uses Fieldbooks and pencils. Fieldbooks stay in class.

Practice entry
Gather your materials and begin the posted prompt.
Partner talk
Take turns, listen, and point to evidence.
“Historians”
Our attention signal. When you hear it, pause and look up.
Exit
Reflect, return the Fieldbook, and reset the space.

Companion sheets reduce copying so students can focus on their thinking. Responses already written on a companion sheet do not need to be recopied.

Devices in class

Personal phones, smartwatches, laptops, and headphones or AirPods stay away during the school day, following school storage procedures. School-approved accommodations apply.

School Chromebooks are used in class only when a teacher directs it for Social Studies. Once Chromebooks are available, they will often be needed for homework.

Missed Class?

You can get your missed work without a website or a Chromebook. Just ask either teacher.

  1. 01Find the lesson resources below, or ask either teacher for a printed catch-up packet.
  2. 02Check what you need to complete, and agree on a return date with your teacher when you receive the materials.
  3. 03Complete the independent catch-up on your own.
  4. 04Return it as directed, and ask about anything that was confusing.

Two kinds of materials

A class companion supports the lesson while we are doing it together in class.

An independent catch-up supports a lesson you missed, and walks you through it on your own.
